Estonian smart charging software developer Gridio has partnered with Volkswagen Group Info Services AG, paving the way for seamless and official API based smart charging for Volkswagen (VW), Audi, Škoda, SEAT, and CUPRA electric vehicles (EV).
Gridio and Volkswagen Group’s new partnership marks another big step toward smarter, cleaner charging for all EV drivers in Europe. This means that soon, drivers of these brands will be able to enjoy the full power of Gridio’s smart charging app — powered directly by official vehicle data from the Volkswagen Group. Gridio´s solution should lower costs for users of these brands’ electric cars.
In January 2025 Estonian startup Gridio raised €2.4 million in a seed funding to expand its smart charging product across Europe.
“Volkswagen Group cars are among the most popular electric vehicles on the market today. We are very happy that their drivers now have access to seamless and reliable smart charging, thanks to official data from Volkswagen Group Info Services combined with Gridio´s smart charging algorithms,” said Konrad Hanschmidt, CEO of Gridio.
The partnership will help Volkswagen Group´ drivers shave up 50% of their charging bill
Digital smart charging – automatically telling electric vehicles to charge when energy prices are the cheapest or there is an excess of home solar, based on actual battery state – is the easiest way to shave up to 50% charging bill.

Until now, most of these solutions for VW Group cars have been reverse-engineered. This means smart charging providers mimic the vehicle apps to receive car data and send commands. Mostly, it works, but sometimes, it does not—as the car companies never intended their apps to be used in such a way. Data could get out-of-date, commands fail, and when the apps are updated, smart charging could break until the new updates are taken into account.
“Through this collaboration, drivers of Volkswagen Group vehicles can now benefit from seamless, data-driven charging experiences, combining official vehicle data with Gridio’s charging algorithms. This partnership is another step toward making smart charging more accessible, efficient, and sustainable across Europe,” noted Volkswagen Group in their Linkedin post.
Gridio’s app-led software suite integrates with a wide range of energy hardware—including most EV and solar inverter brands, and first home batteries—uses intelligent software to optimise energy consumption in real-time.
GOOD TO KNOW
The integrations helps VW Group drivers
This integration combines official vehicle data from Volkswagen Group Info Services with Gridio’s intelligent algorithms, giving drivers an easier, more efficient, reliable, secure and seamless way to charge. There are four reasons why:
- Smart charging will become more reliable, thanks to data polling and commands which are executed via official VW Group channels, taking into account each vehicle’s capabilities.
- The data connection of EV drivers is more secure, providing EV drivers the ability to set up, enable and disable Gridio’s data access through the vehicle of VW group portals.
- Official technical support. Gridio as an established partner can access VW group technical teams, should any issues arise and solve them more efficiently
- Trustworthy smart charging, as your Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat and Cupra car is optimized officially as the car-maker intended, limiting concerns about warranty and battery impacts.
