Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas handed the Estonian flag over to the Estonian cycling team to be taken to the Universal Exposition EXPO Milano 2015. The trip titled EXPORIDE will cover approximately 800 kilometres in Northern Italy.
During the seven days that the Estonian flag will be traveling through the different parts of Italy, the Estonian culture, classical and modern music, food, smart solutions and design will be introduced to local people. And all this thanks to our brave cyclists. All these keywords also symbolise Estonia’s participation in the Universal Exposition. EXPORIDE is not just a cycling trip – it is taking a little bit of Estonia to Italy and leaving our mark in the world.
EXPORIDE cycler Ailar Väärtmaa says that Estonians are world-known for their crazy initiatives. “This time around, a group of Estonians will cycle through the idyllic landscapes of Italy in order to exchange cultures with the residents of the boot-shaped peninsula and deliver the Estonian flag to Milan by 7 June for the Estonian national day”, Väärtmaa added.
Väärtmaa also said that the group of cyclists will cover approximately 800 kilometres in 7 days and will also visit the former Fiat factory complex in Turin and a vineyard owned by Estonians near San Remo. A piece of Estonian culture and innovation will be left at each stopping point.
On 7 June, the final day of the trip, the EXPORIDE Grande Finale will take place, where the Estonian group of cyclists will be accompanied by the local cycling community in cycling from the centre of Milan to the EXPO area. The cyclists will be welcomed by the Estonian national day delegation led by President Toomas Hendrik Ilves to whom the Estonian flag will be handed over in order to open the Estonian national day.
The EXPORIDE team consists of ten Estonian cyclists from the teams of Tour d´ÖÖ, Tallinn Bicycle Week and from the Estonian bicycle design flagship Velonia, as well as several other cyclists of Estonian cycling communities. Cyclists participating in the initiative are, for example, Indrek Narusk (Velonia Bicycles, Viks designer), Kristo Riimaa (Velonia Bicycles), Ailar Väärtmaa (Velonia Bicycles), Anastassia Meshkova (Tour d'ÖÖ, Tallinn Bicycle Week), Tarmo Kübard (Tour d'ÖÖ, Tallinn Bicycle Week), Martin Voltri (Tour d'ÖÖ, Tallinn Bicycle Week), Kristjan Suvi (cycling enthusiast), Lars Erik Hion (cycling enthusiast), Paul Lõiv (cycling enthusiast) and Janelle Uibokand (one of the best young female cyclists of Estonia).
The Universal Exposition EXPO Milan will take place from 1 May to 31 October. The 145 participating countries will offer entertainment, new knowledge and excitement to visitors of all ages.
