During the visit, journalists will also have the opportunity to attend a presentation by Vaido Mihkheim, the new Head of Startup Estonia.  Previously, he worked as a deep-tech project lead and actively contributed to the development of Estonia’s startup ecosystem. Startup Estonia aims to strengthen the country’s startup environment, helping innovative companies create smart solutions to tackle global challenges.

TFTAK tour and snack break

TFTAK is a contract research organization focusing on developing innovative solutions for the food and biotechnology industries worldwide. TFTAK’s mission is to accelerate alternative protein research and support our partners in launching new products and services based on the novel approach of food synthetic biology. We believe that finding innovative ways to use by-products from the food industry and agriculture in food production is the right approach to reducing resource waste.

 

An excellent example of our food innovation achievements is the plant-based salmon fillet, which is very close to real salmon in taste, odor, and texture. The product won the Golden Innovation Award at SIAL India 2024.

 

TFTAK has state-of-the-art laboratory and highly qualified personnel. The center deals with R&D projects of biotechnology as well as food technology. These are very closely related in TFTAK via the use of ‘omics’ methods and in-depth knowledge and understanding of molecules and their behavior. We use modern analytical methods and our pilot plant to find the best possible results.

 

The introduction and lab tour will be hosted by Sirli Rosenvald, PhD, R&D Director, who has been visiting Singapore in 2023 to celebrate the achievements of the salmon fillet development and get to know the food innovation strategies of the country.

Robotics 5.0 tour

5.0 ROBOTICS is an Estonian deep-tech startup that provides robotic automation solutions for all, combined with advanced AI and a strong focus on R&D. The company is built on three pillars: first, offer CNC robots for commercial use; second, focus on dual-use defense CNC robots; and third, developing the future of manufacturing with the minifactory. 5.0 ROBOTICS regionalize production to deliver lightweight, adaptable, and affordable manufacturing systems. We have manufactured and supplied products to a diverse clients, ranging from SMEs to a leading British F1 racing team, an e-commerce giant, and a U.S. defense sector producer, and are present across three continents.

 

You are going to visit the 5.0 ROBOTICS minifactory, which is a compact, mobile, and versatile automation cell designed to maximize profitability and reduce lead time. Co-developed by Giken Sakata and 5.0 Robotics, its core capabilities include the integration of multi-axis robots in a 3D workspace, along with AI and IoT, allowing for rapid reconfiguration for the next product. With its affordable and user-friendly design, the Minifactory allows companies of all sizes to regionalize production.

 

Founded in 1979, Giken Sakata is a Singapore-based contract manufacturer with core competencies that include: (i) Design and Development; (ii) Plastic Injection Molding; (iii) Printed Circuit Board Assembly; (iv) Precision Shaft and Machining; (v) Complete Assembly. Giken Sakata has existing operations across Singapore, Indonesia (Batam), and China (Changzhou) and is supported by ~2,000 dedicated employees globally. Giken Sakata’s annual revenues are in excess of S$100mm from a wide range of clients across Consumer Electronics (Philips / Nidec), Medical (JMS / Olympus), Automotive (Denso / Bosch), and Others (Panasonic / Toyota Tsusho). In September 2024, Giken Sakata signed a strategic partnership with 5.0 Robotics, an Estonian technology innovator in automation. The partnership focuses on integrating cutting-edge manufacturing technology with human intelligence.

Tuljak Restaurant

Bus starts from the hotel at 18.45

The menu of  Tuljak restaurant features some more familiar dishes such as herring with bonfire potatos or curd pancakes, but also newer flavours such as Oriental noodle soup. Each dish is a flavour experience and a combination of the classics and modern.

 

Set in an elevated spot, with distant views of the Gulf of Finland, this airy restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows is a wonderful example of modernist architecture. Dishes have a Baltic heart, with a few Asian and Mediterranean touches; expect plenty of originality and some intriguing flavours. Michelin Bib Gourmand review.

G-Scan tour

GScan leverages muon tomography and AI to detect defects over 10 meters deep in critical infrastructure, including bridges, tunnels, and nuclear systems. In 2023 and 2024, GScan achieved €1.5M and €1.4M in revenue, alongside €3M and €5.4M in investments. In 2024, the company won the prestigious Built World award in Paris and the UK’s “Best Use of Technology – AI” civil engineering award. GScan was also recognized as one of the TOP50 EU deep tech startups (EIC), a TOP8 finalist at the Construction Startup Competition in Las Vegas, and a TOP3 finalist at the Smart Building World Cup in Munich. In 2025, GScan is prioritizing recurring revenue through partnerships with global corporations such as BP, National Highways, AtkinsRealis, and Jacobs, while strengthening its presence with new offices in Cambridge, UK, and Munich, Germany.

 

GScan’s Tartu R&D and Production Development Centre is in Tõrvandi, Tehnopargi tee 5. There is robotic device and other production related technologies, also some ready made equipment. In a tour you will have an overview of muon tomography priciples, see how devices are made, get info about GScan’s history and future plans.

Sparkup Tartu Science Park’s motto is “From Science to Business”.

As the first science park in the Baltics, they are dedicated to supporting companies focused on science and technology. From incubating startups to managing a business campus with laboratories to office spaces, their goal is to help bridge the gap between science, innovative technology, and the business world. In their initiatives, the science park focuses on 5 areas: spacetech, unmanned aviation, AI application, health- and biotech, and greentech.

MYCEEN presentation at experimental building

MyCeen develops carbon-negative insulation materials by combining mushroom mycelium with organic by-products. These innovative materials offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional, polluting insulation and can reduce a building’s carbon footprint by 20%. This makes them a key contributor to achieving a carbon-neutral construction industry. Myceen has built its first test house to monitor the performance of these materials and is currently raising a seed round to scale production and bring this sustainable solution to market.

 

You will meet Siim Karro, CEO and co-founder of MyCeen. In founding, MyCeen Siim relies on an interdisciplinary approach that combines nature’s intelligence with science and design. In 2024, Siim received the Young Designer Award SÄSI from the Estonian Design Association, recognising his contribution to building MyCeen as a designer with a distinct and forward-looking vision.

Gelatex Technologies is a materials technology company that has revolutionized nanofibers production. Gelatex pioneers nanofibrous materials through halospinning, the world’s fastest nanofiber production technology patented by Gelatex. Travel expenses

Travel expenses — including flights, transfers, hotel accommodation, as well as the cost of lunches and dinners—will be covered by the Trade Estonia budget. However, additional services such as minibar beverages, laundry, and spa treatments are not covered by the organizers of the press tour. The hotel also offers a spa and sauna for an additional fee.

 

Upon arrival

Please, check in online 36 hours before departure when your journey begins with a Finnair flight at www.finnair.com/checkin. If you use the self-service kiosk at the airport, please use the barcode from your boarding pass or e-ticket.

 

Upon arrival at Lennart Meri Airport in Tallinn, you will be greeted by our representative holding a TRADE ESTONIA sign. The transfer to  Boutique Nunne Hotel will take approximately 15-20 minutes. The rooms are booked under your names. Upon arrival at the hotel, you will have the option for early check-in. If you wish, you may also enjoy breakfast at the hotel (served until 10:00 AM). Please ask for further instructions at the reception desk.

 

At 16:00 – 18:00, we offer an optional guided walk in Tallinn Old Town. This is not a mandatory part of the program. The tour will end at the restaurant, where the official part of the visit will begin.

 

Lunches and dinners

All restaurant reservations will be made under the name Trade Estonia. Please note that lunches and dinners with officials are conducted under the Chatham House Rule.
