Senior Advisor, GIZ
Dr. Jürgen Steiger holds a PhD in energy economics and a diploma in economics, both from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He has worked as an assistant professor in international economics and researcher at the South Asia Institute and the Alfred Weber Institute of Heidelberg University from 1975 – 1983. After a post-doctoral fellowship on ASEAN at the Institute of South East Asian Studies (ISEAS) Singapore, he joined the Integrated Development Consultants Company (IDC) in Heidelberg as the Head of the Department of Energy and Environment acting later as the Managing Director.
Dr. Steiger has worked for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in China from 1998 to 2016 as Deputy Country Director and Senior Economist and Advisor being responsible for the WTO Accession Project, Economic and Structural Reform Program as well as Regional Economic Cooperation and Integration in Asia.
He is now Senior Advisor for GIZ in the field of economics. A major project Dr. Steiger is involved is focused on the economic implications of the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative.
